Surplus Food Charity, Plan Zheroes : Looking for recipes for their new cookbook

Plan Zheroes are a surplus food charity connecting businesses with surplus food to nearby charities who can use it. They run an online food donation platform where you can quickly, easily and safely share donations of food with charities in your local area. They also run several volunteer-led surplus food collections from markets across London, including London’s iconic Borough Market. This Autumn, Plan Zheroes will be making a new cookbook and they are inviting all who care about food-surplus to join them in this celebration.

Plan Zheroes has a simple mission to ensure no good food will go to waste and no one will live in food poverty. Acting as a broker between local business and charities, they have developed an app incorporating a map which makes it simple to match surplus food available from businesses to charities. Their team of volunteers helps to create, maintain and develop the relationships between the two.

We spoke to Kristen Frederickson, a Plan Zheroes Ambassador and Borough Market volunteer. Outside of Kristen’s dedication to Plan Zheroes Kristen is a food blogger and a freelance cookery writer. She is the author of two books, Tonight at 7.30: One Family’s Life at the Table and Second Helpings.

“Food waste – we all feel strongly about it, how to work to prevent it, how to celebrate our available ingredients in a joyful and delicious way.” she said.

“That’s why, this Autumn, Plan Zheroes will be making a new cookbook and we’re inviting the food-surplus community to join us in this celebration. We’re looking for recipes that celebrate surplus ingredients – when you have extra tomatoes, peppers, bread, dairy, meat, fish – what recipes do you make to appreciate them to the full?

We are looking for soups, main dishes, and puddings, anything that celebrates ingredients and flavour.”

Please email your ideas to info@planzheroes.org or hand them to one of their volunteers at a Borough Market or Kings Cross collection.
